Position Summary:
The Director of Safety and Education will develop and lead a comprehensive trucking industry safety and compliance training program to support PMTA members. This role involves developing and overseeing safety initiatives, coordinating industry events, liaising with regulatory agencies, and supporting member engagement and retention efforts. The Director will serve as a trusted resource for safety and regulatory information and lead key PMTA events to further PMTA’s mission of promoting safety and advocacy within the Pennsylvania trucking industry.
Key Responsibilities:
Safety & Compliance Program
- Program Oversight: Develop, implement, and promote a safety and compliance program that meets the needs of PMTA members and the trucking industry in Pennsylvania, providing information, training, and guidance on industry best practices and regulatory standards.
- Strategic Leadership: Position PMTA as a state leader in safety and compliance by promoting PMTA policy priorities and offering timely resources, research, and expertise, furthering retention and recruitment efforts.
- Daily Support & Outreach: Provide responsive customer service by responding to member requests for guidance, disseminating relevant safety information, and supporting members’ ongoing compliance efforts.
- Educational Program: Develop, organize, and coordinate a comprehensive safety-focused educational program for PMTA that provides training and assistance in-house, online, and at member locations, ensuring content remains practical, relevant, and marketable to PMTA members and trucking industry stakeholders.
- Safety Management Council (SMC) Support: Support the efforts of the SMC to promote trucking industry safety in the state by bringing important issues to members’ attention and leading the discussion on safety-focused issues. Organize monthly SMC meetings, including preparing agendas, coordinating speakers, managing subcommittees, and delivering presentations on safety issues.
- Regulatory Assistance Program: Create and manage a respected regulatory support program for PMTA members, providing accurate, up-to-date compliance resources.
- Agency Relations: Establish and maintain relationships with safety-related agencies and represent PMTA’s interests in meetings and discussions, ensuring timely updates for PMTA members.
- Content Creation: Write regular articles, reports, letters, and other materials on safety and compliance issues, identifying trends that may impact Pennsylvania’s trucking industry.
Membership Engagement
- Member Interaction: Engage with members and potential members to communicate the value of PMTA membership for enhancing safety and compliance.
- Culture of Safety: Advocate for PMTA membership and build a safety-focused culture that encourages retention and recruitment.
- Field Outreach: Collaborate with other team members to coordinate visits with members and potential members, integrating membership activities with safety and compliance.
Event Planning & Coordination
- Major Event Oversight: Serve as the lead for all organizational activities necessary to execute key annual PMTA safety events, including the Truck Driving Championships (TDC), Safety Day Conference, Driver of the Year banquet, and Fleet Safety Awards Luncheon.
- Speaker, Vendor, and Sponsor Management: Source and manage relationships with speakers, vendors, sponsors, and other stakeholders to ensure events deliver high value and meet members’ needs and association’s budget goals.
- Financial & Logistical Management: Develop and manage event budgets, address logistical needs, troubleshoot issues, and provide high-quality attendee experiences.
- Youth Competitions and Road Safety Activities: Coordinate PMTA’s involvement in regional Youth Driving Competitions and serve as a liaison for the Pennsylvania Road Team.
Additional Responsibilities
- Legislative & Regulatory Awareness: Work with PMTA team to monitor current and proposed legislative and regulatory initiatives, providing research and analysis as necessary and guidance to PMTA members on their potential impact.
- Grant Support: Assist with grant applications and grant-related programs to support PMTA’s safety initiatives.
- Team Collaboration: Participate in PMTA committees, support ad hoc projects, and assist with chapter events, legislative events, and the Annual Membership Conference.
- Membership Management Database: Manage members, events, invoices, and web content in PMTA’s database.
Committee & Agency Representation
- Represent PMTA in industry committees and with agency groups, including:
- PennDOT, ATA Safety Management Council, PA Motor Carrier Safety Advisory Committee (MCSAC), Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), PennDOT’s Freight Work Group and Truck Parking Task Force, PA State Police, FMCSA, and other relevant organizations and advisory committees.
- Coordinate PMTA’s education and response to PennDOT’s winter weather restrictions.
Qualifications:
- Skills & Knowledge: Strong background in safety program coordination and regulatory compliance, with expertise in the trucking industry. Demonstrated skill with events planning and coordination.
- Experience: Demonstrated experience in managing safety programs and organizing events, with the ability to serve as a knowledgeable liaison with regulatory agencies.
- Communication & Organization: Excellent verbal and written communication and organizational skills, with the ability to work in a flexible team environment. Skillful in communicating in a way that engages members and connects them to essential safety resources.
- The successful Director of Safety and Education will bring strong problem-solving and organizational skills, along with an exceptional commitment to increasing safety and awareness for PMTA members and the trucking industry in Pennsylvania.
Educational/Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field or high school diploma or equivalent with substantial relevant experience in trucking safety, compliance, and training.
- At least 3-5 years in transportation safety, compliance, or fleet management.
- Strong familiarity with federal and state trucking regulations.
- Certifications, such as a CDL, Certified Director of Safety (CDS), Certified Safety Supervisor (CSS), and Certified Driver Trainer (CDT) are useful but not mandatory.
Other Requirements:
- Ability to provide excellent customer service to members and prospective members.
- Creative problem solver; can independently devise options and solutions.
- Ability to manage multiple projects with competing priorities, shifting needs, and various stakeholder expectations.
- Ability to respond to stressful situations in a professional manner.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to collaborate as a member of PMTA’s team to do what is necessary to support PMTA’s members.
This position is an onsite job in Camp Hill, PA, but travel around the state for events is required to support chapter and PMTA events.
