Brake Safety Week returns August 24-30: Focus on Drums and Rotors.
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has announced that Brake Safety Week will take place August 24–30, 2025 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This annual initiative aims to raise awareness about the importance of brake system maintenance and ensure that commercial motor vehicles are operating safely on our roadways.
Throughout the week, CVSA-certified inspectors will conduct roadside inspections with an emphasis on brake systems and components. This year’s focus is on brake drums and rotors—essential parts that, if compromised, can affect stopping power and pose a serious danger to the public. Inspectors will be looking for issues such as cracks, wear, or missing components. Faulty drums and rotors can dislodge during travel, causing crashes, injuries, or fatalities.
Any commercial vehicle found with brake-related out-of-service violations—or any other violations—will be taken off the road until the issues are corrected.
In addition to inspections, some jurisdictions will use performance-based brake testers (PBBTs) to measure braking efficiency. All inspection and violation data collected during the week will be submitted to CVSA, which will publish a comprehensive report later this year.
Brake Safety Week is not only about enforcement—it’s also a time for education and awareness. Law enforcement agencies, carriers, drivers, and mechanics will all play a role in sharing brake safety best practices. CVSA provides a range of free resources to help fleets, owner-operators, and maintenance teams prepare for inspections and improve ongoing brake system upkeep.
The ultimate goal: reduce preventable crashes by making sure all commercial motor vehicles on the road are equipped with properly maintained, fully functioning brakes.
