Advanced Hours-of-Service Seminar

Take your Hours-of-Service (HOS) knowledge to the next level with an advanced, hands-on workshop focused on log auditing, regulatory interpretation, and real-world compliance application.

This course provides an in-depth review of the key HOS requirements under 49 CFR Part 395, including the 11-hour driving limit, 14-hour duty window, 60/70-hour limits, and 30-minute break requirement. Participants will move beyond basic rule awareness and develop the skills needed to effectively review and audit Records of Duty Status (RODS).

What You’ll Learn

Advanced auditing techniques for reviewing driver logs and identifying violations
How HOS violations develop as multiple regulatory requirements interact
Proper calculation of 60/70-hour recaps
Split sleeper berth requirements and practical application
Common logbook and ELD errors
How to identify compounding violations and compliance risks
How enforcement officers evaluate RODS during inspections
When a DataQs challenge may be appropriate and how to build a defensible case

Hands-On Learning Approach

This interactive workshop uses a building-block approach, introducing one regulation at a time and progressively increasing complexity. Participants will work alongside the instructor through multiple RODS audits, learning how violations are identified and how compliance decisions are made during inspections and reviews.

The course content is informed by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) 40-hour training framework used to educate roadside inspectors and enforcement personnel. Attendees will gain insight into the enforcement perspective and learn how to review logs with the same level of scrutiny applied during roadside inspections.

Prior HOS knowledge is helpful but not required. Experienced attendees will benefit from advanced analysis and enforcement perspectives, while newer participants will gain a stronger understanding of how HOS rules are applied in real-world situations.

What to Bring

A current copy of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) "Green Book" (required for course exercises). Need one? FMCSR Green Books are available for purchase here.
Your company’s Hours-of-Service and/or Personal Conveyance policy (encouraged for discussion and practical application).

Course Format

This is an interactive, discussion-based workshop focused on real-world scenarios, problem-solving, and practical application. Participants will leave with improved log auditing skills, greater confidence in identifying compliance issues, and tools they can immediately apply to strengthen safety operations.
