Reasonable Suspicion Training

Description

If your company operates CDL-required vehicles and has more than one employee, you are required under 49 CFR 382.603 to ensure that supervisors complete 120 minutes of training—60 minutes on alcohol misuse and 60 minutes on controlled substances. This training session fully satisfies that requirement while offering a practical and engaging approach.

Attendees will begin by learning the key elements of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) drug and alcohol testing rules, including how to recognize physical, behavioral, speech, and performance-related indicators of possible substance use. The session also includes guidance on proper documentation procedures required to remain compliant with DOT standards.

Unlike traditional training methods that rely on videos, this course features interactive impairment simulations using specially designed goggles that mimic varying levels of intoxication. These hands-on exercises provide participants with a realistic understanding of what impairment looks and feels like, enhancing their ability to identify signs of substance misuse in real-life situations.

This course is strongly recommended for fleet managers, safety directors, HR professionals, and others responsible for compliance with federal drug and alcohol testing rules. The goal is to ensure supervisors can recognize behaviors that may warrant a reasonable suspicion test and take the appropriate next steps.

Note: Owner-operators are not required to complete supervisor training but must still register with a DOT-compliant consortium for drug and alcohol testing.
