Reasonable Suspicion Training

If your company operates CDL-required vehicles and employs more than one person, federal regulations require designated supervisors to complete 120 minutes of drug and alcohol reasonable suspicion training under 49 CFR 382.603. This interactive course fully satisfies that requirement while providing practical, real-world instruction supervisors can immediately apply in the workplace.

Participants will gain a clear understanding of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's (FMCSA) drug and alcohol testing regulations, including how to recognize the physical, behavioral, speech, and performance indicators of possible alcohol misuse and controlled substance use. The course also covers proper documentation procedures and employer responsibilities to help maintain DOT compliance.

Hands-On Learning Approach

Unlike traditional supervisor training that relies primarily on videos, this course features interactive impairment simulations using specially designed goggles that replicate varying levels of intoxication. Participants will experience firsthand how impairment affects coordination, perception, and decision-making, providing valuable insight into recognizing potential impairment in real-world situations.

The course encourages discussion, practical application, and scenario-based learning to help supervisors build confidence in making informed, defensible reasonable suspicion decisions.

If your company operates CDL-required vehicles and has more than one employee, this training is mandatory for all individuals designated to supervise CDL drivers.

What to Bring

  • A current copy of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) "Green Book" (required for course exercises). Need one? FMCSR Green Books are available for purchase here.
  • Your company’s Hours-of-Service and/or Personal Conveyance policy (encouraged for discussion and practical application).

Course Format

This interactive, instructor-led workshop combines classroom instruction, real-world scenarios, and hands-on impairment demonstrations to provide supervisors with the knowledge and confidence needed to identify potential substance misuse, properly document observations, and take appropriate action while remaining compliant with DOT regulations.

Participants will leave with a better understanding of their legal responsibilities, improved confidence in recognizing reasonable suspicion situations, and practical tools they can immediately implement within their organization.

Note: Owner-operators are not required to complete supervisor training but must still participate in a DOT-compliant drug and alcohol testing consortium. Employers are responsible for ensuring that all individuals designated to supervise CDL drivers complete the required training.
